Trust in the Lord

As a college student I led a Bible study in the local high school.  At one of these studies I asked the students to define faith.  After several students gave answers that we have heard before, including Hebrews 11:1, one young lady said, "Faith is walking to the end of all the light you have and taking one more step."  It struck me then and continues to strike me as a word picture that hits the nail on the head.

Faith is reaching the end of all you know, all you see, and all your resources and still taking the next step.  Faith means trusting that when you take the next step there will be solid ground and light to show the way.  One step at a time.

Not only does this definition hit the nail on the head, it is perfectly illustrated in Scripture.

Psalm 119:105  (NIV)

Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light for my path.

Proverbs 3:5, 6  (NIV)

Trust in the LORD with all your heart
       and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.

Great Scripture...So Now What?

Knowing what faith is, is one thing.  But how do you reach the point where this definition and these Scriptures are more than just nice words?  How do you reach the point in the path of life where you trust God to be:

Your light and lamp

The one you trust most

You reach the point of trust and trust by building a solid foundation of faith by:

Getting to know God

Growing to love God.

Getting to Know God

The first and probably most difficult thing to do is to get to know God.  How?

  • Desire to Know God above all else.  Philippians 3:7-11
  • Communicate with God - Matthew 14:23
Follow Jesus example and get alone to pray, talk with God.
  • Listen when He communicates with you - Jeremiah 33:2, 3
    • In verse 2 God establishes who HE is - He shows why he can do what we find in verse 3
    • In verse 3, God will tell you awesome things.
  • Study God's Word and learn about God
    • Jeremiah 31:3 - God's love is everlasting
    • Matthew 5:48 - God is perfect
    • These are just a beginning

As you build your foundation with these basics you will get to know the God who desires for you to love and trust him above all else.

Growing to Love God

Matthew 22:34-38

  • "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind."  vs 37
  • As you build your relationship with the Lord, as you get to know Him better and better you will see that you will grow to love Him more everyday.
He will become as the writer of Proverbs 18:24 says - "The friend who sticks closer than a brother."
  • This one who sticks closer than a brother is the one who asks you to love Him above all else and with all your heart, soul and mind.
  • As you grow to love God in this way, you walks the path that leads to the destination of trusting Him with all your heart.

The Destination

Proverbs 3:5, 6

Trust in the LORD with all your heart
       and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.

This is the destination - where knowing and loving God above all else - leads.

  • When you reach the end of your resources, when you have total darkness in front, an ocean to your left, a desert to your right, and a mountain behind - When you need to choose between staying here or moving on - knowing God and loving God above all else will allow you to trust God despite all else.

In order to reach the destination of trusting God with all your heart there can be NO shortcuts.  Begin with the desire to know God above all else, communicate with God in prayer, listen as He communicates with you, and study His Word to know more about Him.  As you do this you can grow to love God above all else, growing to the point of being able to trust God with all your heart.
