The Cost of Being a Disciple

Jesus called 12 men to follow him while he was here on earth.  These were known as his disciples.  There was a cost to them to follow Christ, and today there is a cost for those of us who would be his disciples.  What is that cost?

"The life of a disciple is one of submission to Christ.  Jesus said that we cannot be His disciples unless we give up our lives and follow Him."  Don Walker

Luke 14:25-33

Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters-yes, even his own life-he cannot be my disciple. And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

"Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, saying, 'This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.'

"Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.

We must count and understand the cost of being a disciple of Christ.

A disciple is one who is totally devoted to Jesus, fully capable of and extremely effective in making disciples of others.  But there is a cost that is incurred when we decide to become a disciple of Jesus.

What is the cost we incur in order to be one of His disciples?

Matthew 13:44-45

"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.

"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls."

Just as the kingdom of heaven is a treasure that will cost us everything we own to obtain; being a disciple of Jesus is also a treasure that will cost us everything we own to become.

Luke 5:1-11 - The calling of the first disciples - Simon, James and John

"They pulled their boars up on shore, left everything and followed Him."

Luke 5:27-28 - The calling of Levi

After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. "Follow me," Jesus said to him, and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.

What was the cost to Simon, James, John and Levi of being a disciple of Jesus?

Luke 9:18-27 -
The Cost of being a disciple of Jesus

  • Total denial of self (vs. 23)
  • Take up  your cross (vs. 23)
  • Loss of life (vs. 24)
  • In addition see Philippians 3:7-11
    Everything I have = rubbish

Luke 9:57-63
- Additional costs

  • No permanent place to live - Transient lifestyle  (vs. 58)
  • No family (vs. 60-61)
  • "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God." (vs. 62)  A powerful statement!

Matthew 19:16-30

  • Get rid of everything and follow Jesus  (vs. 21)
  • It will be difficult (vs. 22-24)
  • BUT, it is not impossible  (vs. 25-26)

Being a disciple of Jesus will be:

            Downright unpleasant at times.

We are called to follow Jesus into discipleship at the cost of everything and everyone we hold as important in our lives.
