To Be a Disciple 2 by MDommel Comment (0)

In the first part of this post I wrote that “we are to follow Jesus — be His disciples — in the same way that we are to love Him — as Jesus says in Mark 12:30 ‘with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’”

And, “that it is possible to become this type of disciple — this type of Christ-follower — but not without help. We cannot become this without help.”

I love doing research — and in my research on the topic of discipleship I came across this.

William Barclay — a well known and well respected 20th century author, radio and television presenter, Church of Scotland minister and Professor of Divinity and Biblical Criticism at the University of Glasgow — said this about being a disciple of Jesus –

Hidden Truth Assumed Truth by MDommel Comment (0)

A.W. Tozer in The Pursuit of God states “In all Christian teaching certain basic truths are found, hidden at times, and rather assumed than asserted, but necessary to all truth as the primary colors are found in and necessary to the finished painting. Such a truth is the divine immanence.”

Christ commands us in Matthew 28:16-20

“go and make disciples of all nations” — The “hidden and assumed truth” here would be that in order make disciples — you must already be a disciple.

“teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” — The “hidden and assumed truth” here would be that in order to teach all that Jesus commanded — you must first know and understand all that He commanded.

One more thing — we are responsible to God for how we teach, who we teach and what we teach.

Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly {James 3:2}.

Discipleship by MDommel Comment (0)
Jesus called 12 men to be his disciples. He had many disciples that followed him during his ministry. Some of these follower-disciples left him when the times got tough. What is it that makes a person a disciple? Who are the ones who make disciples?
